At least 85 people have been killed and hundreds of thousands of people have been displaced as one of the strongest typhoons of the time smashed into the central Philippines, officers said.

At least 90 people in the central Philippines have died in floods and heavy rains caused by Typhoon Kalmaegi. 75 others are missing. Tens of thousands have been evacuated after rains flooded homes and streets, swept away vehicles and left people trapped on their roofs.

Typhoon Kalmaegi leaves 66 dead in Cebu, Philippines, amid recovery efforts from a previous earthquake, prompting a state of calamity.

The storm, locally named Tino, made landfall early on Tuesday, leaving a trail of destruction by reducing homes to rubble and clogging streets with debris, including in Cebu, a major tourist hub.
