Until his election and inauguration as governor, Mr Okpebholo, a member of the APC, was the senator representing the Edo Central Senatorial District.

In addition, the Senate has  directed the Independent National Electoral Commission to conduct a fresh election to fill the vacancy.

Godswill Akpabio, the president of the Nigerian Senate, has declared the seat of Governor Monday Okpebholo vacant and issued one directive to INEC.

On December 11, Speaker Abbas Tajudeen declared the seat of Edo State Deputy Governor Denis Idahosa vacant, following a request from House Leader Julius Ihonvbere.
