A packed beyond capacity bus carrying passengers returning to work after Diwali fell into a deep gorge in Uttarakhand's Almora district on Monday, killing at least 36 of the over 60 people on board.

At least 36 people have died and several others have been injured after a bus fell into a 50-meter-deep gorge in India’s northern state of Uttarakhand.

At least seven people were killed and many injured on Monday when a bus fell into a deep gorge in Uttarakhand's Almora district, a senior official said.

The Chief Minister has directed the Commissioner Kumaon Division to conduct a magisterial inquiry into the incident, the CMO said.

At least 36 people have been killed and more injured when an overcrowded bus veered off the road and plunged into a deep gorge in northern India.

The bus was carrying more than 40 people in Almora district in the mountainous state of Uttarakhand. So far 24 bodies have been recovered from the wreckage, said Vineet Pal, a state government official.

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said instructions have also been given to airlift seriously injured passengers if required.

A tragic accident in Uttarakhand saw a passenger bus plunged into a gorge near Kupi, resulting in the recovery of 36 bodies from the wreckage. The bus, carrying 46 passengers, was en route from Pauri to Ramnagar. Rescue operations are ongoing with local police joining the efforts.
