The Pentagon inspector general's office will investigate US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth's use of commercial messaging app Signal to discuss air strikes on Yemen, according to a memo.

The Acting Inspector General (IG) of the US Department of Defence (Pentagon) will probe Secretary of Defence Pete Hegseth's use of Signal in a group chat with other national security officials to discuss military actions against the Houthis.

The use of the messaging app by Trump’s national security officials was brought to light when a journalist was accidentally added to the group chat.

The Pentagon’s acting inspector general has announced that he will review Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s use of the Signal messaging app to convey plans for a military strike against Houthi militants in Yemen. The review will also look at other defense officials’ use of the the publicly available encrypted app, which is not able to handle classified material and is not part of the Defense Department’s secure communications network. Hegseth’s use of the app came to light when a journalist, Jeffrey Goldberg of The Atlantic, was added to a Signal text chain by national security adviser Mike Waltz.

April 3 (UPI) -- Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and other members of the Trump administration are being investigated for their recent use of a Signal app before a military strike on the Houthis in Yemen.

The evaluation will look into whether Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth complied with department policies when using a Signal group chat last month.
