Jan. 1 (UPI) -- New York City has a new mayor Thursday after the private swearing-in ceremony in an abandoned subway tunnel just after midnight, then a public one for all of New York to enjoy.

At 34 years old, Zohran Mamdani becomes the city's first Muslim mayor, the first of Asian descent and the first to be born in Africa.

Mr. Mamdani reaffirmed that he would govern New York City as a democratic socialist and assured even those who had not voted for him: “I am your mayor.”
