WASHINGTON >> Airlines canceled nearly 1,200 flights today, the fifth consecutive day they have topped 1,000 since the government imposed mandatory flight reductions to address safety concerns.

Following the FAA's announcement last week about reducing flights at major airports across the U.S., thousands of flights were canceled over the weekend, and the cancellations will continue this week.

Nov. 10 (UPI) -- Several thousand flights were again canceled or delayed Monday as the Federal Aviation Administration cut down on service because of air traffic controller shortages amid the longest federal government shutdown.
