Jan. 2 (UPI) -- U.S. President Donald Trump warned the Iranian government Friday that the United States would intervene if it resorted to deadly force amid mounting anti-government protests across the country over prices, inflation and a currency collapse.

Shopkeepers in the capital Tehran went on strike on Sunday over high prices and economic stagnation, actions that have since spread into a protest movement with political demands that has swept into other parts of the country.

As demonstrations continue to spread across Iran, President Trump said the United States would intervene if Iranian authorities used lethal force against peaceful protesters.
