After the chaos at Salt Lake Stadium, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Saturday expressed sorrow over the mismanagement witnessed at the Stadium. She also apologises to Lionel Messi and other sports lovers for the unfortunate incident.

What was billed as a marquee football spectacle turned into anger and disorder as Messi’s brief and tightly ring-fenced appearance, his first at the venue since 2011, left large sections of the crowd frustrated despite many having paid hefty sums for tickets

“There was some kind of anger and anxiety among the fans because he was not playing,” West Bengal director general of police Rajeev Kumar told news agency PTI.

Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee expressed shock over the chaos at Messi's event at Salt Lake Stadium and apologised to the footballer and his fans.

Disorder broke out as thousands of fans, frustrated at being unable to see Messi during his brief appearance of less than half an hour, breached security and hurled chairs and bottles inside the stadium. Organisers struggled to control the crowd, turning the high-profile event into what critics described as a logistical nightmare.

The Chief Minister expressed shock at the mismanagement, apologised to Messi, and formed an inquiry committee led by a former judge to investigate the incident and prevent future occurrences.

Following the incident, Additional Director General (Law and Order) Jawed Shamim confirmed that Satadru Dutta, the chief organiser and promoter of the event, had been arrested.
