May 1 (UPI) -- The military government in Myanmar announced former leader Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, who was ousted in 2021, has been moved from prison to house arrest.

Former Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi has been moved from prison to house arrest and her sentence has been reduced as part of a prisoner amnesty for a Buddhist holiday.

Aung San Suu Kyi's son said the transfer did not mean freedom and called for the military junta to provide "proof of life." The former leader has not been seen in public since 2021.

Aung San Suu Kyi, 80, was initially sentenced to 33 years but will now have just over 18 years left to serve.
