Onana branded worst goalkeeper 'EVER' after Europa League error
by TAMARA PRENN · Mail OnlineAndre Onana was lambasted by fans on social media after a critical error led to Tottenham's winner in their Europa League final against Manchester United.
The Red Devils shot-stopper has come under fire for his occasionally erratic ball handling since he joined the club in the summer of 2023 under then-manager Erik ten Hag.
But there could be no bigger stage for the Man United No 1's misstep on Wednesday night, with Man United fans watching in horror as Pape Matar Sarr's whipped cross was deflected wildly by Luke Shaw and given a helping hand by Onana.
Supporters on social media quick to point the finger solely at the goalkeeper when Spurs pulled ahead in the 42nd minute, with few holding back as they shared their immediate thoughts.
'Andre Onana is so so poor,' one fan lamented, with another adding: 'Andre Onana is the worst goalkeeper in the history of football.
'That is a howler.'
'Another day, another Onana mistake,' a third added.
'Onana might be the worst keeper I've seen at the top level and I'm not exaggerating,' one commenter shared.
Another questioned: 'Onana doesn't have strong hands? He should be dragging that ball on the line with a strong hand. (Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Gianluigi) Donnarumma will be saving that.'
But a few reserved their fury for Shaw for his part in the goal.
'Of course Shaw had to be involved he's been terrible,' one wrote.
'Shaw and Onana can never play for Manchester United again after tonight.'
Onana was branded 'one of the worst keepers' in Man United's history by former star Nemanja Matic ahead of their European clash with Lyon in April.
According to Opta, the Cameroon international has the worst clean-sheet percentage and the second-worst save percentage of any United goalkeeper to have played 900+ minutes since the 2003-04 season.
The goal proved to be the only of game as Tottenham beat their Premier League rivals for the fourth time this season to seal Europa League glory.
