Maresca reveals Man City stars begged for Fernandez before £125m move

Fernandez joined City on deadline day for a joint-British record £125m fee, with Maresca disclosing that the excitement over the Argentine midfielder extended beyond the club’s hierarchy.
The Italian previously worked with Fernandez at Chelsea and said City players repeatedly asked about the progress of the deal during the final days of the transfer window.
“I just said he is a winner and when you belong to a squad and another winning player arrives, they are always happy.
“I can promise you that in the last four or five days four or five players from the squad were asking if he is coming or not because they want him to be with us.
“It’s very important that he is with us and we are 100 per cent happy with that.”
Fernandez could make his City debut against Coventry City on Saturday, with Maresca confident that the midfielder has the mentality required to compete for major honours.
“I know Enzo quite well and I know what he can bring to the team,” Maresca said.

“He is a winner – a winner’s mentality and knows how to win [after] the World Cup, Club World Cup.”
Fernandez left Chelsea after serving as captain under Maresca, although the City boss has since confirmed Ruben Dias as the club’s new captain following Bernardo Silva’s departure.
Erling Haaland, Marc Guehi and Gianluigi Donnarumma are also part of the leadership group at City.
Fernandez made 170 appearances for Chelsea, scoring 31 goals and providing 30 assists, while helping the club win the Club World Cup and Conference League.
