Manchester City formally appeal Premier League guilty verdict
by Moronfolu Adeyemi · The Eagle OnlineManchester City have formally appealed the Premier League Commission’s verdict in the club’s disciplinary case, challenging the findings on several grounds.
The club confirmed that it lodged its comprehensive appeal at 7pm on Thursday, October 1, 2026, ahead of Friday’s deadline.
The Premier League also confirmed that City had appealed the decision of the independent Commission.
The appeal follows the Commission’s finding that City were guilty of serious breaches of Premier League financial regulations over a nine-season period.
The Commission said the club had arranged “sham” contracts with commercial partners as part of a “disguised funding scheme” and had also breached its duties to cooperate with the league’s investigation.
In its statement, Manchester City said the Commission’s opinion contains “clear material errors, of law, principle and fact” and described the decision as unsafe.
The club also maintained its innocence, saying: “The Club is innocent of the accusations made by the Premier League and a comprehensive body of irrefutable evidence exists in support of all of its positions, relating to this case.”

City said it would continue to respect due process but noted that it is restricted in what it can say publicly while the proceedings remain ongoing.
The appeal has now moved the case into its next stage, with an independent Appeal Board set to review the Commission’s decision.
The hearing will remain private and confidential until publication of the outcome is permitted.
The original verdict, announced on September 29, found City guilty of all charges related to serious breaches of the Premier League’s financial rules and the majority of the charges concerning its cooperation with the investigation.
Potential sanctions have not yet been finalised, with the disciplinary process continuing alongside the appeal.
The Football Association has also said the verdict has “significant implications for the integrity of the game” and that it is monitoring the case.
The final outcome of Manchester City’s appeal remains to be determined.
