Wrexham goalkeeper Okonkwo switches international allegiance to Nigeria

Wrexham goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo has switched his international allegiance from England to Nigeria after receiving approval from FIFA.

The 24-year-old goalkeeper, born in London to Nigerian parents, is now eligible to represent the Super Eagles.His change of association was confirmed on FIFA’s official platform on Monday.

Okonkwo previously represented England at youth level from under-15 to under-18 before opting for Nigeria.

He developed through the academy of Arsenal and had loan spells at Crewe Alexandra and Sturm Graz before joining Wrexham in 2023, initially on loan before making the move permanent.

The goalkeeper has since established himself as first choice, making 119 appearances and playing a key role in the club’s successive promotions.

This season, he has featured 42 times across competitions, recording 10 clean sheets in 37 Championship matches.Following the approval, Okonkwo is available for selection by head coach Éric Chelle ahead of upcoming international friendlies.

Nigeria are scheduled to face India on May 26 and Poland on June 3.His inclusion adds depth to the goalkeeping unit, which currently includes Stanley Nwabali, Maduka Okoye and Francis Uzoho.

The development is expected to strengthen competition for places in the squad ahead of future assignments.
