Former Super Eagles captain and coach Sunday Oliseh has described Ademola Lookman’s move to Atletico Madrid as a major step forward and a positive signal for Nigerian football.

Ademola Lookman completed his transfer from Italian Serie A side Atalanta to the Spanish LaLiga club earlier this week.

Oliseh said the switch places Lookman at a top club that regularly competes at the highest level in Europe and offers both sporting and financial benefits.

“Looking at it, Atletico Madrid plays almost every year in the UEFA Champions League.

“The bonuses from championship are huge, the Spanish league pays well, you are not going there to earn poorly.

“The tax system is good and allows players to do well. The cost of living is cheaper,” Oliseh said.

“This man is going to do well financially whether you like it or not. If you’ve never played in a top club you will never know the impact of a top club in your life.

“I am blessed to have played in three top clubs so when you play in a top club you become big and that is what Atletico Madrid is,” he added.

Oliseh said the move would also inspire younger Nigerian players.

“It is a boost for Nigeria’s football and now, more young players can hope and dream of going to these top leagues,” he said.

Reacting to his transfer, Lookman expressed excitement about joining a new league and adapting to a new environment.

“I’m very happy to be here. It’s amazing. I’m happy to come here that is another top league.

“It’s a new language but I’m excited, I like to learn and it’s what I’m looking forward to,” he said.

“There are amazing footballers here and I’m looking forward to playing with them. I have to learn and get better every day.

“It’s a new challenge for me and I’m excited to do it. I am very aware of the fans and supporters and the passion that they bring to the players,” Lookman added.
