Troost-Ekong converts to Islam, recites Shahada in Qatar + Video

The 33-year-old Nigerian defender publicly embraced the Muslim faith in Doha, where he currently plays club football for Al-Ahli SC.
Qatari newspaper Al-Arab first reported the development on Wednesday, with video footage of Troost-Ekong reciting the two testimonies of faith later spreading across social media.
In the video, international Islamic scholar Dr. Muhammad Salah is seen guiding Troost-Ekong through the recitation before welcoming him into the faith.
Reports indicate that Troost-Ekong has expressed a strong desire to continue reading and learning more about Islam.
Troost-Ekong has built a professional career spanning several clubs since 2013, including Watford in England, where he played from 2020 to 2023, and Udinese in Italy, where he featured from 2018 to 2020.
His first move to the Arab region came in the summer of 2024 when he joined Saudi Arabian club Al-Khaleej.
He later moved to Qatar’s Al-Ahli in January and has since made 14 appearances for the club across all competitions, including one appearance in the current season.

At international level, Troost-Ekong won 83 caps for Nigeria between 2015 and 2025, scoring eight goals.
He captained the Super Eagles to the final of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations and was named the tournament’s best player.
Troost-Ekong retired from international football last November after Nigeria failed to qualify for the 2026 World Cup.
