WAFU-B U-17 Girls Cup: Flamingos thrash Niger Republic 5-0
by Moronfolu Adeyemi · The Eagle OnlineNigeria’s U-17 women’s team, the Flamingos, began their 2026 WAFU-B U-17 Girls’ Cup title defence in emphatic fashion with a 5-0 victory over Niger Republic in Yamoussoukro on Wednesday.
The Flamingos dominated from the opening whistle, controlling possession and dictating the pace of the encounter.
Captain Harmony Chidi put Nigeria ahead in the 16th minute with a composed finish to reward the team’s early pressure.
The Flamingos continued to control proceedings as they searched for a second goal, which eventually arrived through Awawu Bashiru’s clinical finish.
Adegbuyi also found the net during the first half, but her effort was ruled out for offside.
Niger Republic struggled to create opportunities as Nigeria maintained their control, with goalkeeper Onyiyechi Opara barely troubled throughout the opening 45 minutes.
The Flamingos resumed the second half with the same attacking intent, using their pace and creativity to keep the Nigeriens under pressure.
Nigeria remained patient in possession before eventually finding a breakthrough late in the game.
Ohunene Sunday extended the lead to 3-0 in the 83rd minute before Mary Dunstan added a fourth goal to leave Niger Republic facing a heavy defeat.

The Flamingos completed the rout in stoppage time when Ayomide Rotimi scored in the 94th minute to make it 5-0.
The comprehensive victory gave Nigeria a perfect start to their title defence, combining five goals with a clean sheet and a dominant performance in Yamoussoukro.
