Chelsea targets Rosenior as Maresca replacement

Chelsea have begun the process of appointing a new head coach with Strasbourg manager Liam Rosenior emerging as the leading contender for the role.

This followed the departure of Enzo Maresca on Thursday after just one season in charge, amid reported internal tensions with Chelsea’s hierarchy and ownership.

The 45-year-old departs as the club once again moves to reset its long-term project.

According to a report by BBC Sport, Rosenior is understood to be the frontrunner to succeed Maresca, although other candidates remain under consideration.

The 41-year-old currently manages Strasbourg, currently owned by BlueCo, the same investment group that purchased Chelsea in 2022.

The shared ownership structure is seen as a factor strengthening his candidacy.

BBC Sport reported that Rosenior is believed to have significant internal backing at Stamford Bridge, with Chelsea keen to maintain continuity in their footballing philosophy.

With speculation growing over a possible move to west London, Strasbourg are already understood to be considering potential replacements should Rosenior depart.

Porto head coach Francesco Farioli has also been mentioned as an option as Chelsea continue to assess the market.

Chelsea’s owners are expected to maintain a data-led and progressive recruitment approach, prioritising a coach aligned with the club’s long-term vision.

Rosenior is viewed internally as a safe option, having worked within the same multi-club structure at Strasbourg.

The former Hull City boss has built a strong coaching reputation, first in England and more recently in France.

He impressed during his time at Hull City and has further enhanced his standing during his spell in Ligue 1, where he has been praised for tactical flexibility, man-management and work with young players.

Chelsea are yet to make a final decision, but Rosenior’s name has moved to the forefront as the club seeks clarity on its next managerial appointment.
