In the most shocking turn of events, the Dallas Mavericks are trading Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers for Anthony Davis, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania.

The move was officially announced later Sunday.

Per Mavericks: “The Dallas Mavericks announced today that they acquired 10-time All-Star Anthony Davis, guard Max Christie and a 2029 first-round pick from the Los Angeles Lakers in exchange for guard Luka Dončić, forward/center Maxi Kleber and forward/center Markieff Morris. As part of the three-team deal, the Utah Jazz acquires guard Jalen Hood-Schifino and a 2025 second-round pick from Los Angeles and a 2025 second-round pick from Dallas.”

The Mavericks reportedly approached the Lakers and offered Doncic. The Lakers’ brass met and concluded that the 25-year-old Doncic has the potential to be the face of their franchise for the next decade, while Davis provides a win-now solution for Dallas.

Mavericks general manager Nico Harrison is expected to address the team before Sunday’s game against the Cleveland Cavaliers to explain the trade, sources told The Athletic.

According to Hoopshype, this is the first in-season trade in league history in which an All-NBA 1st Team selection is traded for an All-NBA 2nd Team selection.

With the trade to Lakers, Doncic is no longer eligible to sign a supermax this summer and can only extend for 30 percent of the cap beginning in 2026-27, according to John Hollinger.
