Thomas Tuchel saw Salah Wembley masterclass that provides perfect England solution

by · ChronicleLive

Amid all the celebrations and partying on Sunday night, I hope someone remembered to take Mo Salah out of Tino Livramento's pocket before the Wembley strips were washed.

The Liverpool talisman has caused Newcastle United enough problems in recent years, so I hope he'll forgive us that tongue-in-cheek remark - but it's not far off the mark is it? The fact that Salah was barely involved in the Carabao Cup final owes much to the performance of Livramento, playing out of position at left-back. The former Chelsea and Southampton youngster put in a sterling display against the Egyptian, ensuring the ball rarely made it to his feet, and when it did, giving him little time to control and threaten the United goal with his undoubted skills.

Of course, Livramento was only called into the role due to the crushing blow to United and England team-mate Lewis Hall. The 20-year-old had been one of Newcastle's best players of the campaign, but will miss the rest of the season after undergoing surgery on a foot injury.

Not only did that rule Hall out of the Carabao Cup final and United's Premier League run-in, but it also robbed him of the chance to continue his England career under new head coach Thomas Tuchel. Hall made his debut for the senior side under Lee Carsley in November, but now can only watch on as the squad gather for the first time under the new German boss. Left-back has been something of a problem position for the Three Lions in recent years, with Manchester United defender Luke Shaw suffering horrendous injury luck.

Newcastle's Kieran Trippier played the majorty of EURO24 out of position on the left side of the England defence - but if Tuchel is looking for a replacement for Hall, albeit temporary, then he can't fail to have been impressed by what he saw from Livramento at Wembley. Arsenal's Myles Lewis-Skelly has earned his first call-up too, and is obviously a more natural fit at left-back, but surely Livramento has done enough to start at least on of the two World Cup qualifiers against Albania and Latvia.

Indeed with Dan Burn and Anthony Gordon in the squad, the left-hand side of the England team could have a very Newcastle United feel to should all three feature at the same time. Livramento already has one cap to his name, and will be looking to add significantly more in the favoured right-back role in years to come.

But if Hall is the long-term future for England at left-back, Tuchel can't go far wrong with his Newcastle team-mate, at least for now.
