Alan Shearer has already made Liam Delap feelings clear amid Newcastle United transfer tussle
by Hannah Pinnock · ChronicleLiveNewcastle United are in the market for additional firepower next season to support Alexander Isak. The Swedish striker has helped spearhead the Magpies' push for Champions League football and Alan Shearer has already given a rave review of a one of the Toon's transfer targets.
Callum Wilson's future at the club is uncertain with his contract set to expire at the end of the season. Will Osula has spent the majority of the campaign playing second fiddle to Isak, but has played just 83 minutes of Premier League football across 11 appearances.
A report from The Telegraph, earlier this week claims Newcastle are prepared to rival Manchester United for Liam Delap's signature this summer. The 22-year-old Ipswich Town striker, could be available for a cut-price fee of around £30 million if the Suffolk club’s relegation is confirmed this weekend.
Delap has Premier League experience under his belt, having joined Ipswich from Manchester City’s academy last summer. Despite the club’s struggles to stay in the top flight, he has managed an impressive 12 goals in 32 appearances.
However, Newcastle are not the only club reportedly vying for Delap’s signature, with Manchester United and Chelsea also said to be in the mix.
When discussing the Red Devils' interest in Wolves forward Matheus Cunha, Shearer suggested they should also consider a move for Delap - a point that could just as easily apply to Newcastle as they look to strengthen their options behind Alexander Isak ahead of a potential return to the Champions League.
Speaking to Betfair, Shearer said: "They [Man United] have also been linked with Liam Delap, one or the other? They need to sign both.
"They need a top-class centre-forward like Delap. He’ll have tons of options, Delap will.
"When you look at all the clubs who need a centre-forward in the Premier League - Arsenal, Chelsea, Man United, Liverpool, Spurs - there'll be huge clubs all looking at Delap. There's no doubt, if it is that amount of money, then he will have big options."
