What Bruno Guimaraes did after Newcastle United singalong as Jamie Carragher sent warning
by Aaron Stokes · ChronicleLiveBruno Guimaraes enjoyed one of his best nights to date as Newcastle United captain on Monday evening, netting the only goal at the London Stadium as the Magpies overcame West Ham United in the Premier League.
Guimaraes' second-half strike sent the travelling contingent wild in the capital, before the Brazilian enjoyed a little sing song with those in the away end at full-time. Taking in the post-match scenes, the midfielder sang "E-I-E-I-E-I-O, up the Premier League we go", as well as Newcastle's Wembley-inspired 'Que Sera, Sera' classic.
"He's better than me!" Jamie Carragher reacted as Sky Sports showed the clip to their viewers before interviewing Guimaraes at full-time. However, despite the jovial start to their conversation, the chat soon turned serious as Newcastle's captain sent a firm message to Carragher, and the rest of the Liverpool faithful, that his team are more than up for the cup later this week.
"Of course, I think so," Bruno responded when asked if Eddie Howe's side can beat Liverpool at Wembley. "I believe that we can win. It's a final - everything can happen, everything can happen.
"It's half and half. I believe our fans can make the difference for us. I think for us it's like the World Cup, you know, this Carabao Cup is everything because like I said we want to make a history for this club.
"It's a long a long time for the fans without the trophy, and it's a big game. We believe that we can go there and hopefully get the trophy."
Many were already beginning to write the cup showpiece off after a shaky period of form, injuries, suspensions and Liverpool's rampant form. However, Monday's win in east London will no doubt change the mood around Tyneside heading into the huge clash with Arne Slot's side.
There's a reason Howe insisted the 1-0 victory ranked as one of the biggest of United's season. This, despite the north east outfit struggling at times, especially going forward.
On the game, Guimaraes added: "Massive win. We want to fight for the Champions League again and it was a big win for us. Good character, keep the clean sheet.
“Very good, gets the confidence back with the final in the next days. Massive win. Very happy for the team performance. Very good.
“When we don’t win the game your confidence goes down a little bit, but when we play like that, we show the character of the team.”
