Newcastle United are Carabao Cup final champions

Carabao Cup prize money confirmed as Newcastle United defeat Liverpool to end 70-year wait

Newcastle United brought an end to a 70-year wait for a domestic trophy with a 2-1 win over Liverpool in the Carabao Cup Final.

Eddie Howe's side were dominant throughout the game and wrote their name into the Tyneside history books, despite a late Liverpool scare from Federico Chiesa.

A first-half header from Dan Burn gave the Magpies the lead just before the half-time interval. The centre-back rose highest to power Kieran Trippier's header into the bottom corner past Caoimhin Kelleher as Wembley erupted.

Over 32,000 Geordies roared their side out for the second-half and didn't have long to wait before they were in dreamland.

Jacob Murphy nodded Tino Livramento's cross down into the path of Alexander Isak, who fired a low drive into the bottom corner.

The win means Howe is the first English manager to win a major honour since Harry Redknapp's FA Cup triumph with Portsmouth in 2008 and the first Newcastle boss to do so since Joe Harvey in 1968-69.

Carabao Cup triumph means a return to European football via the Europa Conference League qualifying route, though they'll be hoping for a strong end to the season with Champions League football being secured.

As winners of this year's competition, Newcastle will only pick up £100,000 in prize money, with no real financial reward in their battle with Financial Fair Play and PSR.

Liverpool will take home £50,000 as runners up and have gone from being in line to complete a treble, to having just the Premier League title to compete for.

The Magpies are back in Premier League action on April 2, when they host Brentford at St. James' Park, playing in front of a home crowd for the first time since becoming champions.
