Newcastle United prove Jamie Carragher horribly wrong after Liverpool Carabao Cup final triumph
by Isaac Seelochan · ChronicleLiveNewcastle United have ended 70 years of hurt after winning the 2025 Carabao Cup final.
Goals from Dan Burn and Alexander Isak against Liverpool on Sunday have given the Magpies their first major domestic trophy since 1955. Eddie Howe's side have sent thousands of Geordie fans into wild celebrations at Wembley Stadium as Newcastle taste long-awaited silverware success.
The Magpies' victory in London has also ended Liverpool's hopes of a domestic double. The Merseyside club look almost certain to win the Premier League this season, but Arne Slot's team won't be adding the League Cup to their trophy cabinet.
And Newcastle have proven the words of Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher wrong. The former centre-back spoke in the build-up to Sunday's game about his former team's expectation at playing finals.
"I think it's just the experience of winning trophies, playing at Wembley, players that have been there a lot in the last few years. Newcastle haven't got that," the Liverpool legend told Redmen TV when asked what Liverpool's biggest strength is heading into the London showpiece.
"I always felt this going into the cup final as a Liverpool player - we weren't always the favourites in the games we went into but you think 'you're Liverpool, you're supposed to be, you're supposed to win cup finals'. Certain clubs don't have that. Newcastle don't have that.
"It's nothing to do with those players, it's the history of the club, it's the badge, it's the feeling. Sometimes it's difficult to explain... I think that'll be Liverpool's biggest strength.
"It won't feel like the biggest game in the world. It'll feel like a big game, we're supposed to be here, we're supposed to win."
Carragher's words have now come back to haunt him, with Newcastle denying his former team in a major final. The Magpies will now be hoping this triumph is the start of something special.
