William Osula decision made at Newcastle United ahead of massive summer for Magpies
by Lee Ryder · ChronicleLiveNewcastle United dressing room leader Dan Burn believes that William Osula could yet save the Magpies a few million this summer.
The young Danish forward has found first-team minutes hard to come by this season, but grabbed his first Premier League goal with a flying header against Ipswich Town. With four games to go he may yet showcase his talents further and put himself in the mind of Eddie Howe for next season.
Already, talk of a loan deal next term for the ex-Derby County and Sheff United youngster has been played down. And Burn knows that if Osula shows the type of prowess that earned him his first top-flight goal, he won't do badly.
As suggestions of a new striker arrival continue to bubble beneath the surface at St James' Park and speculation that Callum Wilson may leave continues, Osula could be the man to offer cover to Alexander Isak next term.
Blyth lad Burn told Chronicle Live: "Yeah, that'll be his target, and I'm sure he can. He's shown in a couple of positions the potential that he's got. He just needs to be consistently at the level that you can see. There’s really big flashes of it where you can see a top, top player, and the more consistent he can be with that will only help."
For all that this term has been the waiting game for the £15m summer signing. He has been unused substitute 22 times but never once looked like a player that was going to kick up a fuss.
Burn reflected: "I've always said that when you sign for Newcastle with the manager we've got that it's really hard to hit the ground running. We demand a lot from each other and the way that we play, the patterns that we use, the standards that we drive each other and he's had to be patient. He's got some very, very strong competition in his position, which is tough for him, but he's done really well.
"A lot of the staff have been working a lot with him one on one and trying to push him. So really happy for him to get his first Premier League goal. I think that's always an important one, especially the position he plays."
After the game Howe also hinted the time could be soon for Osula to get those priceless opportunities more often. He said: "Getting goals from different players is key. Dan has always scored important goals for us and it was great to see Will score with a great header. He is a player of rich potential and hopefully that is a real confidence lift for him."
