Why overlooked Newcastle United moment vs Ipswich Town could have cost them
by Jack Flintham · ChronicleLiveNewcastle United have been informed that Dan Burn's goal against Ipswich Town should have been ruled out due to an overlooked moment at St James' Park.
With the Magpies leading after Alexander Isak's penalty gave them the advantage in first half stoppage time, Newcastle would make it 2-0 in the second half as Burn's header set them on the way to all three points.
However, on the latest episode of Ref Watch, a new piece of footage shows that the initial corner kick was taken with the ball moving.
The laws of the game clearly state that a ball must be stationary when a free kick, corner, goal kick or penalty is taken. This was not spotted on the pitch and the goal was allowed to stand.
Some have questioned whether VAR should have intervened to overrule the goal and take it back to the corner, but former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher has explained why this was not possible.
"The VAR doesn't check restarts but the assistant isn't looking at the ball and that's where the damage is done," he explained.
With Newcastle surviving that scare, they would go on to add a third as William Osula secured the win and condemned Ipswich Town to relegation from the Premier League.
While the Tractor Boys' fate was all but sealed before the match in the north east, Newcastle's 2024/25 season is far from over.
The Magpies sit third after this weekend's action, two points ahead of sixth-placed Nottingham Forest. Nuno Espirito Santo's side do have a game in hand over Newcastle after featuring in the FA Cup this past weekend.
Should they win that match against Brentford on Thursday night, they will move above the Magpies into third with four matches remaining. This season, the top five will qualify for the Champions League thanks to UEFA's newly expanded format.
