Leeds United unveil Elland Road expansion pictures as Newcastle weigh up St James' decision

by · ChronicleLive

Leeds United have unveiled the first images of what Elland Road could look like once proposed expansion work is completed. The club has confirmed "Revitalisation" plans for the West and North stands, while outlining "changes" for the South Stand.

A public exhibition for fans and locals will be held on May 22 and 23 at the Centenary Pavilion at Elland Road. It comes as Newcastle United weigh up plans to increase the capacity at St James' Park or build a new state-of-the-art stadium as the Magpies look to increase matchday revenue.

Just last week, Leeds City Council unanimously agreed to initiate the process of selling its land around Elland Road to Leeds United, a necessary step for any expansion work to commence and for a formal planning application to be lodged, reports Leeds Live.

While no specific timelines for the completion of works have been provided, club sources indicate that the team's return to the Premier League is a key factor in this regard. The Council has also consented to enter a Memoriam of Understanding - a formal but non-legally binding agreement - with The Lowy Family Group concerning plans to rejuvenate the wider area, including the introduction of a new tram link and the refurbishment of local amenities.

Leeds United released a statement accompanying the images, which read: "Leeds United Football Club is today delighted to unveil proposed images for the enhancement of Elland Road. Last week, Leeds City Council's Executive Board unanimously agreed the regeneration vision and Councillors will now be discussing the pre-application for the modernisation of Elland Road Stadium at a Plans Panel meeting on Thursday 8th May 2025, with the view to increase the capacity from 37,645 to up to 56,500. The estimated final capacity of the design in progress is approximately 53,000.

"An evolution of what makes Elland Road great, the revitalisation of the West and North Stands, along with changes to the South Stand, will provide greatly improved general admission and hospitality facilities, to help meet the demand for tickets, with 26,000 supporters currently on the club's season ticket waiting list.

"Fans and members of the local community can visit a public exhibition at the Centenary Pavilion at Elland Road, which will be open from Thursday 22nd May 2025-Friday 23rd May 2025, or one of two consultation events as part of a community roadshow in Leeds."
