Newcastle United get new Bruno Guimaraes referee goal verdict after controversial VAR moment
by Jack Flintham · ChronicleLiveNewcastle United have been told why it was correct that Bruno Guimaraes' goal against Ipswich Town was ruled out during their 3-0 victory at St James' Park in the Premier League.
With the scores level, the Magpies thought they had taken the lead in bizarre circumstances. The ball looped into the air at the back post and goalkeeper Alex Palmer appeared to bump into the Brazilian with the ball then hitting him and going in.
Guimaraes wheeled away in celebration but on-field referee Michael Salisbury immediately ruled the goal out for what was a perceived foul by the Newcastle captain. The decision was checked by VAR but James Bell, ultimately, decided to stick with the on-field call.
Revisiting the incident, former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher told Sky Sports show Ref Watch why he felt the right decision was made by the officials. "I think the fact he turned his back on the goalkeeper swayed the referee," he explained. "And once the ref gave a foul, the VAR is never going to send him to the screen."
However, while Gallagher could see why the goal wasn't given, former Liverpool and Blackburn Rovers defender Stephen Warnock felt sympathy towards the Magpies.
"I don't understand why it's not given," he added. "He stands his ground. He doesn't influence anything the goalkeeper does. The goalkeeper runs into him. From Bruno's point of view, he's expecting a knee in the back and the goalkeeper to claim it. I'm not having that - at all - as it's soft."
Ultimately, it would not affect the outcome of the contest as Newcastle cruised to a 3-0 victory. Alexander Isak's first half penalty opened the scoring, before Dan Burn and William Osula sealed the points after the break.
With four matches to go, Newcastle sit third in the Premier League but could be overtaken by Nottingham Forest on Thursday night should they beat Brentford in their game-in-hand.
