Eight players ruled out of Carabao Cup final as Newcastle and Liverpool face late test
by Stuart Jamieson · ChronicleLiveNeither Newcastle United nor Liverpool will be a full strength at Wembley this afternoon when the two sides go head to head in the 2025 Carabao Cup final.
Eddie Howe and Arne Slot will have to cope without several key players, with internationals ruled out in both squads. It's perhaps Newcastle who have been dealt the bigger blow, with the left-hand side of their side taken away by suspension and injury.
However, Liverpool did not escape unscathed from their Champions League encounter with Pari Saint-Germain on Tuesday night, with a couple of injury issues to rub salt into the wounds following their penalty shoot-out defeat. Here's who is missing from both squads today.
Anthony Gordon
The Newcastle United winger serves the second of a three-match ban after he was sent off in the FA Cup defeat to Brighton earlier this month. He missed the 1-0 win over West Ham and will also sit out the Premier League game with Brentford after the international break. He will, of course, be able to play for England next week.
Sven Botman
The Dutch defender has had a difficult time with injuries. He has worked hard to recover from ACL surgery he underwent almost 12 months ago, but picked up a new knee injury in the Carabao Cup semi-final second-leg win over Arsenal. Fortunately it's not the same knee, and it's hope hed can return before the season ends.
Lewis Hall
The same can't be said for England defender Lewis Hall, however, with the youngster out for the rest of the campaign after undergoing surgery on a foot problem. The 20-year-old has been one of United's stand-out players this season, but after playing through the pain, he had to finally step back and take action.
Jamaal Lascelles
The United club captain has been out of action for almost 12 months now after undergoing ACL surgery last April. He has been working hard on his recovery and could yet feature before the season is out, but today's game comes too soon for the expereience defender.
Trent Alexander-Arnold
Liverpool were dealt a major blow when Alexander-Arnold limped out of the Champions League clash with Real Madrid on Tuesday night. There has been no timescale put on the England star's recovery, but the Reds are hopeful he can still play a part in their season.
Conor Bradley
The Northern Ireland international would have been the ideal replacement for Alexander-Arnold, but is also ruled out after picking up a hamstring injury in February. Reds boss Arne Slot has suggested he could return in April, but he will miss the international fixtures - and today's game at Wembley.
Joe Gomez
It's unclear whether Gomez will play again this season after picking up a hamstring injury which has kept him out for several months.
Tyler Morton
The Liverpool youngster has been missing with a shoulder injury which requred surgery.
