Michael Owen makes 'strange' Newcastle United cup admission after showing Liverpool colours

by · ChronicleLive

Michael Owen may be a Liverpool fan - but even the former Newcastle United striker 'enjoyed' the Magpies' Carabao Cup triumph.

Owen has never disguised his allegiances, of course. After all, this is a pundit who gleefully danced around the Premier League studio following Liverpool's late winner against Newcastle at St James' Park last season.

Owen even admitted that it almost broke his heart to join Newcastle in 2005 because the striker was so set on a return to Anfield. A buyout clause ended up being inserted into Owen's lucrative contract at Newcastle, which gave the England star the chance to return to Liverpool at a price that reduced incrementally by £4m each year. However, given how Owen's spell at Newcastle panned out, it was hardly a surprise that his boyhood club did not come calling.

Owen did not exactly endear himself to Geordies but after watching both of his former clubs do battle at Wembley on Sunday, the former England star had no complaints as Newcastle ended a 70-year wait to win a major domestic trophy.

"Well, it's just amazing, isn't it, that Newcastle have broken the duck in many ways," he told OLBG following Newcastle's 2-1 win. "I don't think any neutral out there would begrudge them their victory.

"Of course I'm a Liverpool fan and wanted Liverpool to win, but there was something a little bit strange about enjoying Newcastle winning as well. They're a great club and I've obviously got fond memories of playing for the club.

"It has such a passionate following, it's been such a long time. We all know what it means to them."
