Newcastle United CEO Darren Eales hugs Eddie Howe after the Carabao Cup final win against Liverpool

Newcastle United boardroom's 'important' reaction to Liverpool win after PSR admission

Darren Eales has hailed Newcastle United's Carabao Cup triumph as 'so important' because it gets the 'monkey' off the club's back following a crippling wait for silverware.

Newcastle won a major domestic trophy for the first time in seven decades following a 2-1 win against Liverpool at Wembley. Sunday's victory felt like just the start as chairman Yasir Al-Rumayyan declared: "That's the first - and it's not going to be the last."

Eddie Howe, similarly, spoke about 'wanting more of these days' immediately after the win and the Newcastle boss' words were echoed by his players. Captain Bruno Guimaraes hoped it was 'just the beginning of trophies for this club'. Joelinton 'hoped it was the start of a new era'. Alexander Isak hoped there were 'just bright days in front of us'.

The cups, after all, have so often proved a springboard for other sides over the years. Although this is a different era compared to when Chelsea won the Carabao Cup in 2005 or when Manchester City lifted the FA Cup in 2011, before PSR rules were introduced, Sunday's win has given Newcastle a priceless taste of success.

"Because of the financial regulations that we have, it's difficult to get there as quickly as we all hoped to so that's why winning this trophy was so important," Eales, the club's CEO, told BBC Radio Newcastle. "It is the monkey off our back. It's something that has been there.

"Compared to two years ago, it was just a different feel. Even that experience of two years ago and going to Wembley gave us that experience.

"Hopefully, this will be the first of many to come but one thing I have learned is you have got to savour it. You never know when the next one is going to come around so let's make the most of it, let's enjoy it, and then we will be super laser focused on the league come the game against Brentford. But, at the moment, it's a time to be excited and celebrate the fact we have won a trophy."
