Newcastle United Carabao Cup win to bring economic boost to city

The Tyneside economy is set to get a major boost from Newcastle United’s Carabao Cup win.

Sunday’s victory over Liverpool gave an immediate boost to the dozens of pubs around the city and the win means European football will be returning to Newcastle next season, bringing thousands of visitors to the city as well as showcasing the area to international audiences.

The club’s place at the heart of the city centre has long been a big driver of the local economy on match days, but United’s reputation on an international basis has increased since the takeover by a Saudi-led consortium and the subsequent improvement in the team’s fortunes.

The possibility of a new or enlarged ground would also benefit the economy both during the construction stage, as well as from the increased capacity it will bring.

Stephen Patterson, chief executive of city centre business improvement district company NE1 Ltd, said: “No superlatives can adequately describe how Newcastle is feeling today – even those who aren’t ardent football supporters will feel the joy and reap the benefits alongside the Toon faithful with all the accolades, celebrations and benefits this monumental win will bring to the city.

“As Carabao Cup winners, we are guaranteed our place in Europe, fixtures that will welcome tens of thousands of away supporters into our city and boost our economy by millions. We will roll out the famous black and white welcome to these visiting teams in time but for now, it is time to celebrate and to issue our hearty congratulations and thanks to Eddie Howe, Dan Burn, Alexander Isak and all those magnificent players.”

The Invest Newcastle organisation added: “A hugely exciting moment to see Newcastle United Football Club win their first domestic trophy in 70 years.

“The football club, like our great city, has an incredibly bright future ahead of it and we can’t wait to see what this holds with the worlds of business and sport coming together to create one of the most investable propositions in Europe.”
