Liverpool equal Sunderland 90-year record thanks to Mohamed Salah goal
by Stuart Jamieson · ChronicleLiveIt may turn out to be just a footnote in what could be a remarkable season for Liverpool, but Arne Slot's side have now achieved something no side have matched since Sunderland way back in 1935.
The Reds came from a goal down to beat Southampton 3-1 in Saturday afternoon's Premier League clash at Anfield, with a Mohamed Salah penalty double adding to Darwin Nunez's equaliser to earn another three points in their bid for the title. Things had looked different at the break when the Saints led through Will Smallbone's goal, thanks to a mistake from Champions League hero Alisson Becker in the home goal.
However, as they have made a habit of doing, Liverpool got the job done in the second half, and can now focus on Tuesday night's Champions League second leg with Paris Saint-Germain before the Carabao Cup final with Newcastle United next Sunday. The records keep tumbling for Slot's men, with Salah's brace from the spot equalling Ian Rush's club record of 10 league goals against Saints. Only Rush and Roger Hunt have more Liverpool goals than the Egypt international's 242.
However, Salah's first goal was also the 19th-successive home game they had scored at least two, equalling Sunderland's top-flight record from 1935. The Wearsiders famously lifted the Division One title in the 1935-36 season, the sixth and currently last time that they would do so, after finishing runners-up to Arsenal the season before.
Few would bet against Liverpool going on to lift the Premier League title this season, with the Reds now 16 points ahead of second-placed Arsenal, who do have two games in hand, starting against Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday.
