Bruno Guimaraes and manager, Eddie Howe of Newcastle United F.C. celebrates

Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe drenched in beer as wild celebrations prompt press conference joke

by · ChronicleLive

As Eddie Howe walked into his post-match press conference, looking understandably dishevelled, he made an apology to those waiting to put questions to him. "If you can smell something funny, it's probably me!"

Moments earlier Howe had been drenched with an ice cooler full of beer and then sprayed with champagne. Joelinton was the culprit, with Bruno Guimaraes also involved...

The post-match scenes - both on the pitch and in the dressing room - were a sight to behold as Newcastle made history by beating Liverpool 2-1 at Wembley. Howe, in the process, ensuring he now enters the Magpies' record books forever.

“We were well aware of the history and we wanted to do the club proud,” said the Newcastle chief. “We wanted to score, we wanted to perform and we wanted to win.

“We are breaking new ground. I thought we were magnificent today. I am very, very emotional and have been all day, which is unlike me.

“We knew what was at stake today for all of our fans – we wanted to do them proud and win the trophy. I am so, so pleased with the result and the performance – we deserved to win today.”

Newcastle will jet to Dubai tomorrow as the bulk of the squad enjoy a well earned celebration in the Middle East. Others will jet off for international duty, perhaps a tad jealous at missing out on the post-trophy win plans Howe has in store.

"I want to enjoy it first. I am always about tomorrow but I’ll put the coaching books away for a few days," Howe added.

The win means Howe is now the first English manager to win a domestic trophy since 2008, ending Harry Redknapp's reign as the holder of that accolade. It also means United will definitely play in Europe next season after booking their spot in the Europa Conference League.
