Kieran Trippier of Newcastle United celebrates after the Carabao Cup Final

Tearful Kieran Trippier makes impressive Newcastle United promise Eddie Howe and fans will love

by · ChronicleLive

He was the first man to take the plunge and join a newly-plush Newcastle United. Swapping a La Liga title tilt for a relegation row, many wondered why Kieran Trippier had decided to take such an almighty gamble at a crucial time in his career.

In the aftermath of Sunday's Wembley win over Liverpool, the right-back hit back at those critics who claimed he did it for the money. It was rather the opposite as he took a pay cut to help Eddie Howe guide Newcastle to safety.

Since then, he has been the standard-bearer. He has hauled this team to the Champions League, dragged them to cup finals and, now, lifted yet another trophy.

“I’m proud, emotional. It’s been a rollercoaster couple of years since the takeover happened and as I said when I first signed, it’s about building, taking your time, step by step and we’ve bounced back from the hurt of two years ago," an understandably emotional Trippier told reporters after the Carabao Cup final win.

“You don’t want to get too carried away. The club has come so far in a short period of time. As I’ve said many times, people will talk about the Premier League, the Champions League etcetera but it’s all about building.

“Enjoy this. The supporters deserve it. And everybody associated with Newcastle deserves it … what doesn’t get mentioned are the people at the training ground, the staff who put everything on. Kitchen ladies, everybody. It’s not just the players."

There will be a party. The players - and fans - will certainly enjoy it. However, after the warm weather trip to Dubai and the international break, it is back to business for Newcastle.

The Magpies may have booked their place in the Europa Conference League play-off stages - but they are aiming for more, in the form of a return to the Champions League. Trippier has promised he will make sure Sunday's victory is not the final time the Newcastle faithful are celebrating come the end of the season.

"We’ll enjoy it then go into the international break but we’ve got a big run-in ahead because we want to finish in the top four," he continued. "I feel like myself, the leadership group will keep everybody level-headed and make sure we finish the season well.”
