Alexander Isak fury serves Wembley warning and Newcastle United Carabao Cup final team 90% picked
by Lee Ryder · ChronicleLiveNewcastle United striker Alexander Isak threw his arms up in the air at the lack of quality service at the London Stadium last night.
Despite the win, the Magpies' main man was left isolated at times and unhappy with the build-up play which left him without a decent shot at goal. For all this was a very good victory, it could have been made a lot easier.
Isak's only real moment of the game was when Jacob Murphy's cross deflected off Max Kilman before a last gasp flick of the ankle tried to guide it goalwards. In the end Bruno Guimaraes' winner was enough to snatch it but Isak cut a frustrated figure when he went off, even if he is unscathed for Sunday.
Isak had just 29 touches in all and while the left-hand side is an area in which Eddie Howe is looking to build confidence, getting the service right for the Sweden star will be vital if the Magpies are to hurt Liverpool at Wembley.
And on a night of major positives, getting the supply line to Isak has to be deemed as a bit of a fail from Newcastle. Getting it wrong at the Carabao Cup final against Liverpool could be costly.
Can Bruno Guimaraes hurt Liverpool after getting more attacking role against West Ham?
The Brazil midfielder admitted that Eddie Howe had handed him more "freedom" at the London Stadium. And it showed as he popped up to grab the all important winner.
Whether he gets that type of licence to roam forward on Sunday remains to be seen. But after the game a triumphant Bruno said: "The gaffer has given me more freedom to be in the box. Today it was a good goal. We worked that hard, and we have seen some videos of them struggling with some crosses."
Sandro Tonali's unseen moment of class Sky Sports cameras missed
The classy Italian international had another solid night in midfield and it was his pass that unlocked West Ham to set up Harvey Barnes to cross for Bruno to poke home the winner. Tonali stayed out of the big celebrations for Bruno's 63rd minute strike and instead went about reorganising the midfield like a true leader.
After the game he then made his way over to a London fan and handed him his shirt after spotting a plea for his jersey.
Is Eddie Howe's Wembley team 90% picked?
Howe proved a few people wrong last night be naming a strong team and resisting the urge to rest a few bodies ahead of Wembley. Significantly, his team also opted against a calm approach and were happy to risk being booked against the Hammers knowing that the three points picked up could be vital for the Champions League chase.
But we could have seen 10 starters for the Wembley final against Liverpool on Sunday. The only change that Howe might make is rotating his keepers again.
After the match Howe admitted that he would continue to adopt a horses for courses approach meaning that Martin Dubravka's calmness for the big occasion may yet be utilised.
