Eddie Howe sent clear Newcastle United message as brilliant Dan Burn demand made

by · ChronicleLive

Newcastle United defied the odds in a Carabao Cup final thriller, coming away with the silverware that some fans have been waiting their whole lives for - and supporters in the Chronicle Live's comments section are full of praise for one man in particular for helping to make that happen.

The Magpies convincingly defeated Liverpool, who were already smarting after their early Champions League exit last week. Newcastle had the best of the first half, with the Reds barely getting an attacking opportunity. They were rewarded in the end by Dan Burn, who headed a lofted corner into the net past Caoimhin Kelleher, sending thousands and thousands into raptures.

Alexander Isak would get the second shortly after the break, owing to Jacob Murphy nodding it down from Tino Livramento. A nervy, tired Liverpool managed to snatch one back - with Federico Chiesa's late goal - but it wasn't enough to prevent Newcastle from lifting long-awaited silverware.

It means everything to the many fans who travelled to Wembley, and for those who watched from afar yelling at their TV screens - and there's one man in particular who gets the plaudits for making it happen. Reader Aspri11a says: "Dan Burn is rightfully player-of-the-match, not just for his dominating all-round performance, but the header he scored. Seriously, that header must be one of the greatest headed goals ever scored at Wembley as the power he generated was immense. It was technically as good a header as you'll ever see."

Commenter Crumblebert writes: "Dan Burn you are a true legend. Thank you Eddie [Howe] and the team - it all means so much!!!"

Itcouldbeworse says: "Big Dan Burn, what a legend! Livramento was outstanding today, up and down the pitch, controlled [Mohamed] Salah. He is out of his better position, but put a quality left-footed cross in for the second goal. Well done Eddie, all of the players, the whole NUFC staff and supporters!"

Motivation writes: "Best players on the field - Burn, Joelinton, and Livramento. The rest were brilliant also. Special word for Livramento - he did not allow their best player a kick."

Namchebazzarr says: "Dan Burn was MOTM, but Trips [Kieran Trippier] wasnt far behind. He was also outstanding and deserves a lot of credit. Livramento was great as well. Was Salah even on the pitch?"

Spartatoon says: "Statue for big Dan Burn in Blyth?" Prospector57 agrees Burn should get some sort of honour: "Amazing historical achievement. Well done lads, took it to them! Should get a film about Dan Burn's life? Sunday league to Wembley cup win?"

Elsewhere, it's a raw outpouring of emotion. Reader 382 says: "I don't have a lot of words to describe my feelings after we roasted Liverpool in the final - and I was very emotional. Football just hits different - and these lads have just given all us Geordies hope moving forward. We don't demand a side that wins, but a team that tries hard, and guess what lads and lasses, they have only gone and done it."

AugCaesar writes: "I retire officially in May at 66, and I've wanted so much to see us win silverware before then. Couldn't have been any closer. I did say we'd no chance but, after watching PSG take Liverpool apart and win on pens, I began to change my mind. I certainly didn't expect a dominant performance, but we got one. Magnificent!"

Kingtroy says: "All the folk who have been saying Eddie Howe is no good - and can’t take us to the top - must be eating the words. He's done a fantastic job with what he's had to work with and the signings he's made have done us well. Now it's time to back him in all windows, and this is just the start of good times. Well done the Toon, come on!"
