Newcastle United superfan, 96, 'delighted' with win and hopes to see Carabao Cup
by David Huntley · ChronicleLiveA 96-year-old Toon superfan has expressed her delight at Newcastle United's Wembley win and is hoping to catch a glimpse of the Carabao Cup in person.
Betty Brown is a resident of Beech Tree House in Alnwick, Northumberland and has held a season ticket for over 40 years. In the lead up to the cup final, she got into the spirit by decking her room out in NUFC memorabilia.
And after seeing her much loved Newcastle lift the cup on Sunday, Betty was overjoyed that the team got the result she predicted. She is also very much hoping some players could even make the trip up to see her so she can see the trophy in person.
Speaking to Chronicle Live, Betty said: "Before the game I was asked what my prediction was and my heart said Newcastle two, Liverpool one. But my head said, Liverpool is a very good team, [so went with] Newcastle two, Liverpool three. But I'm so pleased that Newcastle listened to my heart. I watched the match, I loved the match."
Betty, who has been to see the Magpies play at Wembley four times, also used to take flights to see them play all over the country. A proud season ticket holder for 45 years, she was up until recently a member of the 1892 club and still follows all sport on TV, and is never one to miss a game.
"I'm just so delighted, I can't tell you", she continued. "I've been a supporter for 46 years and it was a condition of my marriage to stop being a Middlesbrough supporter and start being a Newcastle supporter. I've suffered the bad times and enjoyed the good times."
Betty watched the tense final at her care home and said all the residents were getting into the spirit. She said: "We just spent the evening grinning at each other. Everybody was singing 'Geordie, Geordie' and 'Toon, Toon'. One of the girls went out on the front step and all she could hear was voices shouting 'Toon, Toon'."
After the historic win, Betty is now hoping to top it all with a cheeky request to Eddie Howe - she'd love the players to visit her with the trophy. She added: "The carers have said because Newcastle won it for Betty, they are now asking me if the team could come and show me the cup! Now that would be magic! I might be 96 in age, but I'm 26 in enjoyment!"
