Newcastle United get new Kieran Trippier handball verdict after Carabao Cup win vs Liverpool
by Matty Hewitt · ChronicleLiveNewcastle United have been given a new referee verdict following an appeal for handball on Kieran Trippier inside the penalty area during the win over Liverpool in the Carabao Cup Final.
Dan Burn and Alexander Isak were on hand to put Eddie Howe's side two goals to the good before Federico Chiesa scored late into injury time to set up a nervy end to the game.
Fortunately for Newcastle, they'd survive a late onslaught and would write their name into Tyneside folklore, winning their first major domestic silverware since the FA Cup Triumph over Manchester City back in 1955.
The Magpies came flying out the blocks against the current Premier League leaders and had good grip on the game approaching half time. However, Liverpool supporters would say the Toon were fortunate not to have given away a penalty midway through the first half with the score still locked at 0-0.
Dominik Szoboszlai played a long ball up field behind the Magpies' defence looking for the run of Luis Diaz. The Colombian winger managed to get goalside of Trippier before the ball flicked up onto the hand of the Newcastle defender.
Referee John Brooks waved away any on field appeals, before VAR took a look at the decision and deemed the incident accidental.
Former PGMOL chief and Premier League referee Keith Hackett believes the game has gone totally mad if a penalty had been awarded for such a soft incident.
"If that’s a penalty, then the game has totally gone mad," Hackett told Grosvenor Sport. "The ball did sort of catch the end of his fingers, but there was absolutely no intent whatsoever.
"In my day, you wouldn’t have even given it a second thought, so there’s nothing to discuss on that one, in my opinion."
