Chris Wood injury scan latest as Newcastle chase Nottingham Forest in Champions League bid

by · ChronicleLive

Newcastle United will keep an eye on former striker Chris Wood after the Nottingham Forest star was hit by injury on international duty.

The New Zealander was forced off against New Caledonia with a hip injury. The news came as a blow to Forest who have relied on the forward's goals this season in their surprise push for Champions League qualification.

Forest sit third in the Premier League table, seven points and three places ahead of Newcastle, who have a game in hand. Wood has enjoyed a tremendous season, scoring 18 top flight goals as he maintains his incredible form since leaving St James' Park.

The striker only lasted 54 minutes for the Kiwis on Monday in their World Cup qualifier. He had apparently landed awkwardly and hurt his hip and ribs when swivelling for a shot.

Wood was spotted applying an ice pack to his right side after hobbling off. He was due to undergo scans today (Tuesday) in his homeland before flying back to the UK, where he will be further assessed by the Reds.

"That's where the pain is at the moment,” the 33-year-old told New Zealand radio station RNZ. “I felt it on that side, so I'll get it checked over and hopefully it is nothing too major and hopefully it's just impact.”

Forest return to action on Saturday, when they make the trip to face Brighton and Hove Albion in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup (5.15pm kick-off). They then resume their Premier League campaign next Tuesday at home to Manchester United (8pm kick-off).

Newcastle have international injury problems of their own after Anthony Gordon also suffered a hip problem while away with his country. The winger suffered heavy bruising after a clash in the dying seconds of England's game against Albania on Friday night.

He was withdrawn from Thomas Tuchel's squad and will be assessed with Newcastle medical staff on Tyneside. The hope is that the injury is not too serious and he should be available for the game against Leicester City on Monday, April 7 when his three-game suspension is completed.
