Yasir Al-Rumayyan's plan as new Newcastle United era gets under way after Wembley win

by · ChronicleLive

Newcastle United players excitedly spoke of the club's "new era" after shaking off the 70-year tag of life without a trophy.

For years, the travelling Toon Army have been taunted with chants of: "Have you ever seen a Geordie with a cup" and: "You've never won **** all" - but that all pales into insignificance now. After the game Bruno Guimaraes swaggered through the mixed zone at Wembley donning a bucket hat and looking like a man ready to party but also indicating Newcastle now mean business.

Bruno spoke of that "new era" and hopefully, the Carabao Cup trophy, after beating Liverpool 2-1 can be the first of many more pieces of silverware to come. But the psychological burden has now be lifted from the minds of the players.

Alexander Isak told reporters: "When you've been without a trophy for so long it can be in the back of your head but no hopefully we have won this it is bright days in front of us. We will see more from the fans and what it means for the people when we get back to Newcastle. We are all aware of how long it's been for the fans without a trophy."

Joelinton, who was immense in midfield, echoed the words of Bruno and said: "It's the start of a new era for this club. It was so disappointing in the last final when we came here and lost.

"We didn't want to leave anything in the tank today. Everyone was fighting and running. I'm so glad and happy for the fans. I'm happy to make my family proud.

"It's an unbelievable feeling, an unbelievable day. I dreamed so much of this feeling and this day. Well done to every player, coach and everyone connected to the club."

After goals from Isak and Dan Burn, the Toon chairman Yasir Al-Rumayyan celebrated by donning a black and white shirt at the team function.

With chairman Al-Rumayyan very much with the Newcastle party on cup final day it offered the club's Saudi-backers PIF every encouragement to dig deep. Chronicle Live understands that every penny that can be spent on new signings this summer will and Newcastle - now back in Europe of course - will go for the jugular again in the next transfer window.

Newcastle are set to offer Isak a new deal at the end of the current season, a move that may even come sooner rather than later on the back of the cup win. Speaking before he left Wembley, Isak stated: "This is really just the start."
