Carabao Cup Final sees police arrest 69 football fans as Newcastle claim historic win
by Sophie Doughty · ChronicleLiveSixty nine football fans were arrested by officers policing the Carabao Cup Final in London.
It was a moment that will forever live on in the minds of Geordies everywhere as the Magpies ended their 56-year wait for silverware by lifting the Carabao Cup following a 2-1 victory over Liverpool at Wembley Stadium, yesterday. But the desire to get into the ground and see the historic game resulted in scores of people being arrested.
The Metropolitan Police has today confirmed that a total of 69 arrests were made in relation to the final. And a spokeswoman for the London force said the majority were held on suspicion for fraud for trying to get into the ground without a ticket. Others were arrested for assaulting an emergency worker and public order offences.
The spokeswoman said: "A total of 69 arrests were made during Sunday’s policing operation for the Carabao Cup Final at Wembley.
"The majority of arrests were on suspicion of fraud for attempting to get inside the ground without a ticket by tailgating others. Further arrests were made for matters including assault on an emergency worker and public order offences."
The Met did not confirm how many of those arrested were Newcastle United fans.
The number of arrests made in London yesterday is significantly higher than in 2023 when just six people were held in connection with Newcastle's game against Manchester United at Wembley.
Thousands of Geordies made the trip from Tyneside to the capital to take in the atmosphere during the historic weekend. London's Covent Garden was transformed into a sea of black and white on Saturday as supporters gathered ahead of the game.
Meanwhile Newcastle city centre was deserted yesterday afternoon as fans gathered around televisions at home and inside pubs.
Supporters also filled various fan zones around the city with the Stack and Times Square packed out. More than 7,000 supporters also filled the city's biggest ever fan park at the Utilita Arena.
