Newcastle United's Bruno Guimaraes celebrates after the Carabao Cup Semi Final Second Leg

Why Bruno Guimaraes touched the feet of Newcastle United Wembley legend

by · ChronicleLive

Bruno Guimaraes spent time with Newcastle United legend Rob Lee in the build-up to the Carabao Cup final.

And then found himself on the floor as he touched his feet in a bid to get some good luck going into the Magpies' latest trip to Wembley. It was Lee who scored the last goal in black and white at Newcastle with a wonderful header from an Alan Shearer cross in 2000.

Sadly, it counted for nothing as Chelsea won 2-1 in the FA Cup semi-final to deny Newcastle what would have been a last trip to play in front of the old twin towers. Bruno joked: "We spoke with Rob Lee who was the last player to score at Wembley for Newcastle. I talked to his feet to give me a little bit of luck!

"We now want to make our own history. We know how excited the fans are, but we are trying now not to focus on other things because sometimes you cannot think too much about this time.

“We just want to be focused on the job, go there, play our best game and after if everything goes right, celebrating with them is going to be good."

The Brazil international cried on the hallowed Wembley turf last time around knowing that Newcastle's display against the Red Devils had not been up to standard in the 2023 Carabao Cup final. This time he hopes it can be different, he said: "I want tears of happiness this time. Everyone knows how emotional I am, I always try to leave everything that I have on the pitch and to play as a fan because I know what it means for them. I remember this moment, next time I want to cry from happiness and it be a good day.

So can Newcastle end 70 years of domestic hurt? There were certainly good vibes around the media centre on Friday.

Bruno said: "I wouldn't wish the fans to go through this moment any longer, but we are seeing this as a big opportunity to make history after a long time, so at the moment, we are just seeing this as an opportunity.

"Like I said, we want to make history. We know how excited the fans are, but we are trying now not to focus on other things because sometimes you cannot think too much about this time."
