Liverpool medical on Monday – Manchester United claims seem agent driven
by Naveen Ullal · Sport WitnessLiverpool, Chelsea and Manchester United have all been chasing Stade Rennais’ Jérémy Jacquet.
Chelsea were initially ahead of Liverpool, Manchester United and others in the transfer race.
Last Friday, we covered claims from France that Chelsea’s mega-offer could arrive soon. Liverpool’s competition worried the Blues. Manchester United didn’t get a mention.
Ouest-France now covers the latest on Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester United, and the latter two are in for a disappointment.
Manchester United have reportedly been keeping a close watch on the 19-year-old. At the weekend, Liverpool made a concrete move when Liam Rosenior’s side have been pushing to sign him.
According to the newspaper, Arne Slot’s waited until Chelsea made their latest move and didn’t hold back.
Liverpool made a decisive approach and finalised an agreement with the Ligue 1 side late on Sunday.
Ouest-France say it’ll be Stade Rennais’s new record sale, surpassing the €65m collected from Jérémy Doku’s sale to Manchester City in August 2023. The fee for Jacquet will be over €70m including bonuses.
Amid claimed interest from Manchester United and a strong push for Chelsea, Jacquet has now favoured Liverpool. Their ‘strong project’ attracted him to pick the Reds over other two Premier League sides.
The France U21 international wouldn’t move to Anfield on deadline day as Liverpool can close the agreement with the French club for him to arrive in July.
According to them, the defender is determined to finish this season with Stade Rennais, to help them qualify for Europe. The French club are now sixth in the table, a point behind fifth placed Lille.
Journalist Guillaume Lainé covered this report for Ouest-France. He took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to report Jacquet will carry out medical tests with Liverpool on Monday.
The player will then sign a long-term contract with Slot’s side, which would come into effect from the summer. This is a blow for Chelsea and the Red Devils.
Manchester United have the centre-back position currently well covered and have a need to improve their midfield. Therefore, it’s highly unlikely for them to consider spending big on Jacquet.
The agent may have dragged the Old Trafford club into the mix to create a hype in the battle between Liverpool and Chelsea.
