“Formidable player” – Journalist wants Burnley star in “prime of his life” at World Cup
by Sean Lunt · Sport WitnessBurnley star Zian Flemming should be going to the World Cup with the Netherlands this summer as he’s currently in the “prime of his life”.
FC Update report comments from commentator Leo Driessen today. He’s insistent that the Burnley striker deserves his chance on the big stage.
Impressive numbers
Zian Flemming has been in impressive form for Burnley this season, despite the Clarets sitting 19th in the table at present.
He already has eight goals to his name in his debut season in the Premier League. That’s the same number as the likes of Bruno Fernandes, Morgan Rogers and Jarrod Bowen.
He’s only one behind the likes of Brian Mbeumo, Benjamin Šeško and Cole Palmer. It’s an impressive record, particularly given Burnley have only scored 33 goals in total this season.
Reports in the Netherland have already indicated that Dutch boss Ronald Koeman is keeping an eye on the Burnley man. Flemming has also insisted he’s ready to play for the national team. Now Leo Driessen has insisted it’s time.
“Flemming is currently in the prime of his life. If you manage to score eight goals despite missing some games due to injury, you are clearly a formidable player,” FC Update report him saying on ESPN’s Voetbalpraat.
“Plus, he is versatile enough to play in various positions. He is currently playing as a striker, but he can also operate as a number 10 or a number 6. I would definitely take him to the World Cup.
“I’ve had the opportunity to watch Flemming play a few times: he has truly developed into a physically strong player. If you were to weigh that against a striker from Ajax, the choice would be obvious to me.”
Dutch doubts despite Burnley form
Whether Ronald Koeman actually turns to the Burnley star remains to be seen, though. He has so far shown a reluctance to give him a chance.
The Dutch coach is very much set in his ways when it comes to his forward options. But with Memphis Depay struggling for fitness, he has a decision to make.
Flemming is undoubtedly a better option at this point. He’s very much proven his worth in the Premier League this season despite Burnley’s struggles.
The pressure is now growing for the Burnley star to get his chance. Perhaps calls such as this one from Driessen, and others, will be enough to change his plans.
