“We couldn’t spend as much” – Daniel Farke speaks to German media about Leeds United battle

Leeds United manager Daniel Farke has been speaking to Sky Deutschland, part of a round of interviews he’s done this week.

Often, when manager of promoted clubs speak to their home media, the trend of immediate relegation from the Premier League is brought up.

Farke responded by talking about summer business and insisting survival is very much within grasp.

“In recent years, all promoted teams have been relegated without a trace, despite spending insane amounts on transfers. Due to Financial Fair Play regulations, we couldn’t spend as much as some promoted teams in recent years, but we still wanted to aim to be competitive and stay in the league. That is and remains our main goal,” he said.

Leeds United have three wins from 11 league matches. They are now 16th in the table, a point above 18th placed West Ham United and 17th placed Burnley. Sunderland, another promoted team, are much higher up in fourth.

Despite their current league position, the manager told the German media that he’s happy with results. He says it would be “totally unrealistic” to expect Leeds United to be mid-table, “seven or eight points” above the relegation zone.

“Overall, we’re on the right track,” Farke explained.

“But I wasn’t ‘over the moon,’ as they say here, in England after away wins against Wolves or West Ham. Nor am I in a depressed mood because we lost an away game in Nottingham lost, who play in Europe.

“So, I think it’s always important, especially for such an emotional club, to stay at a good level and balanced. Then to run the club stably and not be like a flag in the wind.”

Leeds United’s next four matches are against Aston Villa, Manchester City, Chelsea and Liverpool.
