Latest from Argentine: Player “will be bought by Chelsea” soon, plan laid out
by Sport Witness · Sport WitnessThe South American recruitment model at Chelsea may soon bring another in-form defender into the BlueCo system, with Unión’s Mateo Del Blanco emerging as a name to watch ahead of the summer window.
The 22-year-old left-back has been building serious momentum over the past year. He is no longer just a regular starter at Unión – he has become one of their most decisive players.
In the current season, Del Blanco has already contributed two goals and one assist in 860 minutes, while averaging a strong 7.63 rating. His recent performances underline that rise. He scored against Instituto, then produced a goal and an assist in a chaotic 4-4 draw with Independiente. Shortly after, he delivered an 8.4-rated display against Boca Juniors.
Those numbers matter because they reflect a wider trend. Del Blanco is not a traditional defensive full-back. He plays high, often operates as a wide outlet, and regularly influences the final third.
That is also reflected in his positional flexibility. He can operate further forward on the left, which helps explain his output and growing reputation. This has all caught Chelsea’s attention.
Growing attention in Argentina
That form has not gone unnoticed domestically. Reports from Argentina indicate both River Plate and Boca Juniors showed interest in January. That level of attention usually signals a player is ready for a bigger step, even before European clubs fully engage.
Mateo Del Blanco also offers continuity and availability. He extended his contract with Unión until December 2028 last year and has already made over 90 senior appearances.
His current market valuation stands at around £3.4m (€4m), which places him firmly in the profile Chelsea tend to explore – affordable, developing, and with upside.
Chelsea plan emerges
It is in that context that a new claim has surfaced. Journalist Renzo Pantich reports that Chelsea are certain to buy Mateo Del Blanco and send him on loan to Strasbourg in June.
Pantich states the player “will be bought in the coming months by Chelsea” before joining the French side on loan.
Pantich goes further in his explanation, framing the deal as already mapped out within the group structure.
He indicates that Chelsea’s idea is not just to sign the player, but to immediately integrate him into their multi-club pathway, stressing that the plan is for Del Blanco to “arrive and then be sent to Strasbourg” as part of that process.
The clear tone of certainty in his reporting is telling. Pantich presents the move as something expected to happen rather than a loose possibility, describing the operation as one that is already being prepared ahead of the next window.
That pathway aligns closely with how Chelsea have used Strasbourg since the BlueCo takeover. The Ligue 1 side has become a key development platform for players arriving from outside Europe. It offers minutes, adaptation time, and a lower-pressure environment before any potential move to Stamford Bridge.
Indeed, Valentin Barco has excelled there this season, leading to Chelsea considering a Premier League return for him.
One option is that Barco moves to London, and Del Branco replaces him in France.
What happens next
For Chelsea, this would be a calculated bet rather than an immediate first-team solution. Mateo Del Blanco’s current level suggests promise, but there is still a gap between Argentine domestic football and the Premier League.
However, the structure is already in place to manage that risk. Strasbourg provides the bridge, and Del Blanco’s trajectory suggests he is ready for the next step.
For now, the move remains at claim stage. Still, the profile, timing, and pathway all fit Chelsea’s model closely.
