“Not even considering” – Official ‘can’t imagine’ Leeds United player leaving in January
by Naveen Ullal · Sport WitnessOn August 28th, Werder Bremen signed Isaac Schmidt from Leeds United on loan, after chasing him for more than a month.
The left-back joined Leeds United in August 2024. He was limited to a restricted role in his debut season at Elland Road.
He wanted regular playing time to improve his chances of representing Switzerland at the World Cup. This convinced the Leeds United man to push for a loan move to Werder Bremen.
The temporary move hasn’t gone well so far and Bild explain multiple reasons for the 25-year-old’s struggles.
Schmidt came off the bench to score on his Werder Bremen debut in August. So far he’s played 123 minutes from six matches and is yet to start for the Bundesliga side.
Although Horst Steffen is short of options in the fullback positions, the Werder Bremen manager has favoured centre-back Marco Friedl ahead of Schmidt. Bild claims the former offers ‘more stability’.
This has also been confirmed by Werder Bremen head of football Peter Niemeyer to Bild.
“He’s versatile on the wing and also has attacking qualities. Currently, however, Horst is focusing more on a defensive approach,” he said.
The Switzerland international arrived at the club towards the end of the window. He didn’t have a pre-season with Werder Bremen. This would have hindered his adaptation and integration.
Bild reports the Leeds United owned player’s integration was partly hindered by the three international breaks. He also picked up an injury while with the national team in October.
These are the reasons he hasn’t featured regularly for the German club. Despite all these, Niemeyer insists Werder Bremen aren’t planning to cut short his temporary stay in January.
“I can’t imagine him wanting to leave in the winter. And we’re not even considering that possibility,” Niemeyer explained.
