Guglielmo Vicario: Tottenham goalkeeper set for Monday surgery, season could be over

by · Sport Witness

Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario is set to miss several weeks with the injury that has ruled him out of the international break.

According to Gianluca di Marzio, Vicario has developed a hernia issue that now requires surgery in the coming days. It has ruled him out of Italy’s March international break and potentially ended his season early.

Vicario reportedly felt the problems after Tottenham’s Champions League clash with Atlético Madrid. Further checks confirmed the need for an operation.

The procedure is scheduled for Monday, after which the Italian will face several weeks of enforced rest as he targets full fitness ahead of a possible World Cup call up.

SportMediaSet report the issue is an inguinal hernia.

Tottenham’s crisis deepens

For Igor Tudor, the timing could not be worse. Tottenham are already battling a packed injury list while fighting to avoid relegation to the Championship.

Now they face the prospect of finishing the Premier League run-in without their number one goalkeeper.

Guglielmo Vicario’s recovery timeline remains uncertain, but he will be sidelined long enough to miss a crucial stretch of fixtures. That includes the relegation six-pointer against Nottingham Forest this weekend.

Relegation battle

Tudor will presumably turn to Antonin Kinsky, despite the goalkeeper’s Champions League horror debut against Atlético Madrid last week. Brandon Austin is currently the third-choice option at Spurs.

Tottenham also face Wolves on 25th April and Leeds on 9th May in two other clashes against relegation threatened teams. The question now is whether Vicario can return in time for those.

His absence has also forced a re-shuffle for Italy. Gennaro Gattuso has already brought in Alex Meret as a replacement for the Tottenham man.

Losing him is not as major a blow as it will be for Spurs, but it’s a big moment that could shape both Tottenham’s survival fight and Italy’s preparations for their World Cup play-offs during the international break.
