“We’re going to leave there as legends” – Bruno Guimaraes on messages to Newcastle United dressing room
by Sean Lunt · Sport WitnessNewcastle United captain Bruno Guimaraes has revealed the inspiring message he gave his teammate before beating Liverpool in the Carabao Cup on Sunday.
Journalist Fred Caldeira spoke to the Brazilian after Sunday’s final, in which he revealed his message to his teammates before the game.
Newcastle ended their 70-year domestic trophy drought at Wembley on Sunday, running out 2-1 winners over league leaders Liverpool after goals from Dan Burn and Alexander Isak.
It was a deserved victory for Eddie Howe’s side, who were undoubtedly the better side on the day and inspired by a Newcastle support who were determined to ensure there would be no repeat of their 2023 disappointment.
It was a big moment for the club as they not only ended their trophy drought, which had undoubtedly been a monkey on their back, but also confirmed they are on the right path under Howe’s management.
Those involved have now undoubtedly written themselves into Newcastle folklore, with them now destined to always be remembered as being a part of the side that ended the fanbase’s aching for a trophy.
Guimaraes was aware of that and admitted as much to Caldeira, revealing what he said to his teammates before they entered the Wembley turf.
“Man, before the game, my thing is, I said in the locker room, I told them ‘Today we’re going onto the field as players and we’re going to leave there as legends.’
“And that’s what happened, right? When people tell the story of Newcastle after 70 years, they’re going to tell you about the trophies, the title we won today. The first step is always the hardest.”
