Journalist explains why Manchester United’s ‘daring’ style could end up benefitting Real Sociedad
by Sean Lunt · Sport WitnessReal Sociedad could benefit from Manchester United’s ‘daring’ style under Ruben Amorim when the two sides meet in the Europa League.
That’s according to journalist Miguel Ángel Moyá, via El Desmarque, who believes the Spanish side have good prospects against a team who are becoming regular opponents in Europe.
Manchester United will take on Real Sociedad in the last 16 of the Europa League next month after being drawn against he La Liga side on Friday.
They will travel to San Sebastian for the first leg at the beginning of March before then hosting them at Old Trafford a week later.
It’s the latest meeting in a growing list of clashes between the two sides, who first met in the Champions League back in 2013.
Manchester United won that tie and were again victorious in 2021 when the two sides met in the Europa League. They repeated that again the following year when they met in the group stages, with the Premier League side losing to Sociedad at home but then winning away.
They’ll renew that rivalry next months and Moya is confident the new system under Amorim, which is yet to truly take off, could play into the Spanish side’s hands.
“It’s not that it’s tied, but that Real could benefit from playing against a daring team that doesn’t close down at the back,” he said.
Real have a way of playing that has possession, they look for depth, but they have had problems with teams that close down a bit at the back.
“Manchester United are a good team, Real have already played there and in the end the experience and maturity of a team can also be measured by that recent past.”
